چکیده

In full-waveform inversion of seismic body waves, often the free surface is ignored on grounds of computational efficiency.Asynthetic study was performed to investigate the effects of this simplification. In terms of size and frequency, the test model and data conform to a real long-offset survey of the upper crust across the San Andreas fault. Random fractal variations are superimposed on a background model with strong lateral and vertical velocity variations ranging from 1200 to 6800 m/s. Synthetic data were computed and inverted for this model and different topographies.Afully viscoelastic time-domain code was used to synthesize the seismograms, and a viscoacoustic frequency-domain code was utilized to invert them. The inversion was focused on early arrivals, which are dominated by P-waves but also contain strong P-Rayleigh wave conversions from the near-field of the receiver. Resulting waveform models show artifacts and a loss of resolution from neglecting the free surface in the inversion, but the inversions are stable, and they still improve the resolution of kinematic models. The extent of deterioration depends more on the subsurface than on the surface structure. Inversion results were improved at no additional expense by introducing a weak contrast along a staircase function above shots and receivers.

Discretized Adjoint State Time and Frequency Domain Full Waveform Inversion: A Comparative Study

This study derives the discretized adjoint states full waveform inversion (FWI) in both time and frequency domains based on the Lagrange multiplier method. To achieve this, we applied adjoint state inversion on the discretized wave equation in both time domain and frequency domain. Besides, in this article, we introduce reliability tests to show that the inversion is performing as it should be ...

Large - Scale Waveform Inversions of Surface Waves for Lateral Heterogeneity 1 . Theory and Numerical Examples

Surface wave scattering theory is presented as a new method for analyzing teleseismic surface wave data. Using surface wave scattering integrals the effect of lateral heterogeneity both on the surface wave coda generation and on the direct surface wave is described. Since the employed scattering theory for the forward problem is linear, the inverse problem can conveniently be solved in the leas...

Seismic waveform inversion in the frequency domain, Part 1: Theory and verification in a physical scale model

Seismic waveforms contain much information that is ignored under standard processing schemes; seismic waveform inversion seeks to use the full information content of the recorded wavefield. In this paper I present, apply, and evaluate a frequency-space domain approach to waveform inversion. The method is a local descent algorithm that proceeds from a starting model to refine the model in order ...

9 Free-Surface Vanishing Traction Effects on Shallow Sources

Waveform inversion to determine the seismic moment tensor is a standard approach in determining the source mechanism of natural and man-made seismicity. The moment tensor is a general representation that includes the double-couple (DC) and non-double-couple sources such as explosions, opening and closing cracks, and volume compensated linear vector dipoles (CLVD). Previous studies (Ford et al.,...

Multiscale adjoint waveform tomography for surface and body waves

We have developed a wavelet-multiscale adjoint scheme for the elastic full-waveform inversion of seismic data, including body waves (BWs) and surface waves (SWs). We start the inversion on the SW portion of the seismograms. To avoid cycle skipping and reduce the dependence on the initial model of these dispersive waves, we commence by minimizing an envelope-based misfit function. Subsequently, ...
